Practice what you preach.

“ Jesse Jackson - During the dark days of Bill Clinton's Monica Lewinsky sex scandal, Jackson bravely dove into the media storm and paid a visit to the President to offer moral counseling. Jackson brought along staffer Karin Stanford, who was visibly pregnant. It turned out later that Jackson was the father of that child”

If anyone were to go through cases of hypocrisy, you’d notice that not everyone intended to become a hypocrite. Many would argue that most people start off with good intentions and along the way their moral values are somehow altered.

A hypocrite is basically someone who has double standards. They tend to do things they tell others not to. A lot of people consider people who conceal the truth as hypocrites. That is because we all believe that we should not lie. So when we conceal the truth, we conflict our own beliefs and subsidize hypocrisy.

A basic example of that is when a friend asks whether or not she looks good in a dress she recently bought. Not wanting to hurt her feelings you say yes. But if you were in her situation you’d expect your friend to tell you the truth. Wouldn’t you ??

Let’s say you’re late to work or school, and this was your last strike. Since it’s your last chance, and the only reason you were late was because you caught a late movie the night before and couldn’t get up. Do you A) tell your boss the truth hoping he’d understand. B) tell him you were in an accident. C) just go ahead with your job for the day and accept the consequences.

I know most of you out of self-dignity will choose C, because as a viewer you’d think that that’s the right thing to do. BUT, we all know how we tried to get out of a similar situation ourselves by coming up with an excuse that isn’t always true.

Another example is when parents tell their children not to lie, when they conceal the truth about Santa. ( an example out of our culture, but you get the point ).

Another example on an international level is the US putting an upfront “ war against terror” while they are the ones striking innocent countries. OR, Countries who have amassed nuclear arsenals want other countries not to acquire nuclear capability.

“There are many iniquities and injustices perpetrated by men against men all in the name of high ideals and virtues”.

Sometimes we get a little over the top in trying to assert how we should always be truthful, when in reality we all break that rule. We all get angry when someone lies to us when in fact the majority of people do not have the integrity to be honest themselves.

à In its Greek origins, the word hypocrisy simply referred to "acting out a role," doing what an actor does on the stage. It was never specified whether or not hypocrisy was good or bad. But we as humans, as always, misused it and wearied it off from its true purpose.

Let’s say you were having a bad day, but you then see a friend that you have dearly missed. I’m sure you will put a smile on your face and greet that friend with great pleasure. You in this case could make her day. Doesn’t somehow make you a hypocrite because you are putting an upfront character that conflicts your true feeling? IT DOES ! But that isn’t wrong. We just have a predisposed conception to the word hypocrite, and associate negative qualities to it.

Should we accept hypocracy as a way of life ?

Should we ask to change something that is a part of who we are ?

And with that I leave you to go eat some pineapples,

Shamma.
